Joe W. of Ofcom is this week’s guest on Adult Site Broker Talk.

Joe is a Supervision Principal at Ofcom, the UK communications regulator. He leads the regulator’s engagement with the adult industry and helps businesses understand the requirements of the UK’s Online Safety Act.

Since 2023, Joe and his team have attended industry conferences, organized workshops and produced tailored guidance to support website owners as they work toward compliance.

The Online Safety Act covers any website or app used by people in the UK. Services that host pornography must use highly effective age-assurance measures to confirm that UK users are at least 18.

Ofcom regulates communications services across the UK, including telecommunications, postal services, broadcast television and radio, and online platforms. It operates independently of the UK Government.

Under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom is responsible for helping make online services safer for UK users, particularly children. Services must maintain effective systems to protect users from illegal content and take steps to prevent children from encountering pornography and other harmful material.

Ofcom’s responsibilities include consulting publicly on compliance guidance, supervising services to help them understand and meet their legal duties, and taking formal enforcement action when it suspects those duties have been breached.

The regulator recently published a “Vet Your Vendor” report to help website owners assess age-assurance providers before selecting one.
